Philippine Village Historical Site, est. 2021

The Philippine Village Historical Site is a living monument in Clayton, Missouri that holds space for respectful engagement with the aftermath of the 1904 World’s Fair and the accurate telling of history with the perspectives of Filipinos and Indigenous people at the forefront.

In April 2021 on the death anniversary of Maura, a young Igorot woman who died at the fair, I began carrying a sign around my neighborhood to bring attention to the injustices that occurred in 1904, inviting others to join me until a permanent historical marker is placed.

In October 2022, the city began the process of officially commemorating the site in collaboration with my project. It was approved by the Board of Aldermen in the City of Clayton in July 2023. The installation date of the permanent historical marker is TBA.

For more information about the site, cemetery, guided walk, and other resources, please visit the Philippine Village Historical Site homepage.

In addition to the temporary metal sign, I also commissioned a sign by a local sign painter in my family’s hometown in the Philippines in February 2023.
